In August 2005, Hurricane Katrina caused widespread devastation to New Orleans and other areas of the Gulf Coast. Though much of the city was destroyed, and hundreds of thousands of people displaced, the city’s spirit was not broken. Even now, less than one year later, the city rises again. There is nothing more unmistakable then that 2nd line groove. The Bass Drum kickin it — syncopation in the cymbals and snares — Tuba or Bass laying a foundation. All of it screams one thing — New Orleans! But New Orleans Jazz incorporates more than just Second Line and Brass Bands. The foundation of the style goes back to Blues and Spirituals. It expanded into Rag Time, Stride and early Jazz. In the roaring 20s that sprung into a powerful, raw, improvised, yet highly choreographed dance band sound that gave birth to the age of the Big Bands. Since then the tradition has gone on to influence Blues, Rock and Country … not to mention Zydeco and Cajun … all from the great New Orleans. Read more

Man, I love this tune! The Dallas Blues is a great number — a classic, easy-goin’ blues. I first heard it on a recording by George Lewis on the George Buck Jazzology label and dug it ever since.PepperHorn Down South is laying the dots out for you to give it a crack. Chinatown, My Chinatown is a 1910 swing number from William Jerome (w.) and Jean Schwartz (m.). Its medium-up tempo is balanced by the relaxed, easy flow of the lyrics: “Dreamy, dreamy Chinatown, Almond eyes of brown, Hearts seem light and life seem bright, In China, Chinatown”. — Shaun

We’ve been busy at work creating a new spin on an old classic for our PepperHorn Golden Era catalogue and this one’s a real jem — a 2 Horn to Big Band re-imagining of Scott Joplin’s Maple Leaf Rag. Even at almost a century old, this ole gal’s got a lot to give you and your dancing public! We’ve taken Joplin’s stride stylings and passed them around the band for a fun packed, swingin’ romp through Ragtime. The piano part is a little simplified so your Keyboardist doesn’t take one look at the part and quit! 
… But seriously — this one’s a fun tune and another bargain from PepperHorn Golden Era
