We’ve been busy at work creating a new spin on an old classic for our PepperHorn Golden Era catalogue and this one’s a real jem — a 2 Horn to Big Band re-imagining of Scott Joplin’s Maple Leaf Rag. Even at almost a century old, this ole gal’s got a lot to give you and your dancing public! We’ve taken Joplin’s stride stylings and passed them around the band for a fun packed, swingin’ romp through Ragtime. The piano part is a little simplified so your Keyboardist doesn’t take one look at the part and quit! … But seriously — this one’s a fun tune and another bargain from PepperHorn Golden Era

Hey gang! We’re excited to start adding new previews of our ‘coming attractions’ — tunes that we’ve have approved for sale in other regions and that we’ll be bringing to your area soon through the PepperHorn Store (pending approval). You’ll notice that the previews are laid out just like our regular stock tunes so you can see the product details, instrument ranges and more … but you’ll also see a link where you can register your interest in the new tunes by filling out the drop down form.

Quick hint: If you log into your PepperHorn account first you’ll find that your name and email columns in the forms are already filled out … so all you have to do is click ‘submit’ to register your interest in that tune!

You can learn more about how we license tunes and how you can help us get more material in the store by visiting our ‘Licensing Page’. By registering your interest in these upcoming tunes not only can we let you know when they’re available for your band, but you’re helping us encourage copyright holders to provide us with more material to offer to you and your fellow musicians!

For those of you that have taken the bold leap into Mac’s new OS ‘Lion’ we’ve had a small hickup so far. Apparently the new version of Safari for Mac doesn’t like to play nicely with the PepperHorn Viewer just yet … so we’re working on it. In the mean time I’ve heard from a reliable source (thanks Miquel!) that Firefox on OSX works just fine for those Lion early adopters.

If you’re purchasing charts from us and are currently using Lion as your operating system please also install a 3rd party browser such as Firefox or Chrome. Safari has been a thorn in our side since day one (Mr. Jobs doesn’t like playing other people’s reindeer games), but we do have the OSX version working. I’ll post up an update as we go and hopefully we’ll have the Lion problem sorted soon.

There’s a hot new swing number in the store now from Powder Blues:

Swami Swing is a hot, swingin’ instrumental Blues number that’s a calling card for Canada’s Powder Blues! You’ll find it on an number of albums from the original Uncut right up to this version on 2004′s Blues + Jazz = Blazz!

BLAZZ! — The Powder Blues album that plays like a tribute to all of their varied influences was their 2004 release. Though the title reflects the combo of ‘Blues + Jazz’ any fan of the band will know that Rock, Swing, Country and a hint of Funk are never far away from a Powder Blues cut.

This album features some PB original hits, classic swingers with a fun take like Take The A Train. Capping off the album is one of the Powder Blues’ great signature tunes, Swami Swing. Read more

In August 2005, Hurricane Katrina caused widespread devastation to New Orleans and other areas of the Gulf Coast. Though much of the city was destroyed, and hundreds of thousands of people displaced, the city’s spirit was not broken. Even now, less than one year later, the city rises again.  Jazz Crusade proudly produced this 2 volume special release dedicated to the rebirth of New Orleans and the music that gives it life! There is nothing more unmistakable then that 2nd line groove.  The Bass Drum kickin it — syncopation in the cymbals and snares — Tuba or Bass laying a foundation.  All of it screams one thing — New Orleans! But New Orleans Jazz incorporates more than just Second Line and Brass Bands.  The foundation of the style goes back to Blues and Spirituals.  It expanded into Rag Time, Stride and early Jazz.  In the roaring 20s that sprung into a powerful, raw, improvised, yet highly choreographed dance band sound that gave birth to the age of the Big Bands.  Since then the tradition has gone on to influence Blues, Rock and Country … not to mention Zydeco and Cajun … all from the great New Orleans.
