We’ve been busy at work creating a new spin on an old classic for our PepperHorn Golden Era catalogue and this one’s a real jem — a 2 Horn to Big Band re-imagining of Scott Joplin’s Maple Leaf Rag. Even at almost a century old, this ole gal’s got a lot to give you and your dancing public! We’ve taken Joplin’s stride stylings and passed them around the band for a fun packed, swingin’ romp through Ragtime. The piano part is a little simplified so your Keyboardist doesn’t take one look at the part and quit! … But seriously — this one’s a fun tune and another bargain from PepperHorn Golden Era

Just have a quick listen and you’ll be hooked. You can get it here from the PepperHorn Store! …
Give it a listen!:

For those of you that have taken the bold leap into Mac’s new OS ‘Lion’ we’ve had a small hickup so far. Apparently the new version of Safari for Mac doesn’t like to play nicely with the PepperHorn Viewer just yet … so we’re working on it. In the mean time I’ve heard from a reliable source (thanks Miquel!) that Firefox on OSX works just fine for those Lion early adopters.

If you’re purchasing charts from us and are currently using Lion as your operating system please also install a 3rd party browser such as Firefox or Chrome. Safari has been a thorn in our side since day one (Mr. Jobs doesn’t like playing other people’s reindeer games), but we do have the OSX version working. I’ll post up an update as we go and hopefully we’ll have the Lion problem sorted soon.

If you have any questions just give me a shout at info@pepperhorn.com.

Hey Gang …

We’re always trying to make things easier for you to browse through our catalog and our newest improvement is the new ‘list view’. We’ve cut down on the graphics and put all the important info in one row so its easier to flip through to find the tunes you need. You have the product titles and price at your fingertips and also have the option to add a quick purchase right to the shopping cart.

We’ve also added a couple of new search boxes at the top left and on the sidebar of the <a href="http://www.pepperhorn.com/eu/products-page/"'Our Shop' pages. Search is always a quick way to see if the tune you’re looking for is in the store. We’ll be improving that in the future with a speedier search engine.

As always if you don’t find what you’re looking for be sure to let us know. We’re always working on new licenses to bring you more, 100% legally licensed sheet music for your band or show!

Thanks for checking us out at PepperHorn Music!

There is nothing more unmistakable then that 2nd line groove. The Bass Drum kickin it — syncopation in the cymbals and snares — Tuba or Bass laying a foundation. All of it screams one thing — New Orleans! But New Orleans Jazz incorporates more than just Second Line and Brass Bands. The foundation of the style goes back to Blues and Spirituals. It expanded into Rag Time, Stride and early Jazz. In the roaring 20s that sprung into a powerful, raw, improvised, yet highly choreographed dance band sound that gave birth to the age of the Big Bands. Since then the tradition has gone on to influence Blues, Rock and Country … not to mention Zydeco and Cajun … all from the great New Orleans.

That’s why we’ve started PepperHorn Down South — to make the New Orleans jazz tradition accessible to those far away from the Big Easy. We’re presenting many of the New Orleans Jazz classics in a professional package that any musician or group can dig in to. Our Down South arrangements have a core of 3 horns (Trumpet, Clarinet, Trombone), 3 optional horns (Alto, Tenor and Bari saxes) and 4 individual Rhythm parts (Piano, Bass, Drums, Gutiar/Banjo). Most tunes also have an optional Tuba in F part for Bass available for the string adverse.

Keep your eyes posted here or in the PepperHorn Down South News Threads for more on starting up your own New Orleans group. I’ll be sharing some tunes, thoughts, stories and hopefully be able to get you as excited about the Tradition as I am. In the mean time give some tunes a go and check out the great Mp3s and Albums from Jazz Crusade over at PepperHorn Radio!

What do you think of when you hear words like New Orleans, Traditional Jazz, Second Line, Street Beat? Hopefully ‘Dixieland’ and men in straw hats isn’t the first thing that comes to mind — ’cause you’re far off the mark, mate! The real deal is a hip shakin’, gyrating, dance-inducing groove that just can’t be beat. It incorporates many styles from Trad Jazz and Rag Time to Stride, Gospel, Brass Band, Dance Band and more. Any Big-Band lover will be hooked immediately by the sound of New Orleans Jazz as it’s just like going back to the cradle — it’s where all of the popular music of the 30s, 40s, 50s — and today all originated!

That’s why we at PepperHorn want to make New Orleans Jazz accessible to musicians like you. It’s so much fun — its a genuine, unstoppable crowd pleaser and is guaranteed to make you live longer! We’ve created our PepperHorn Down South brand to pass on the NOLA traditions in an easy to digest form for those new to the idiom. It’s also why we’ve partnered with Jazz Crusade Records to bring you some top notch selections from their catalog here through PepperHorn Radio.

Big Bill Bissonnette has been the man at the helm of the Jazz Crusade label since the beginning and was an instrumental player in the Trad. Jazz revival of the late 50s and 60s that helped keep the music alive. Bill’s story is one of a love of the music — a young, aspiring trombonist and drummer who fell in love with the genre. Bill’s early life revolved around making every opportunity to get himself right into the midst of the action — living, playing and chumming around with the New Orleans greats of the revival era like Geroge Lewis, Big Jim Robinson, Kid Thomas, Punch Miller, Kid Sheik, Polo Barnes, Alvin Alcorn, John Handy and many more. His autobiography, The Jazz Crusade: The Inside Story of the Great New Orleans Jazz Revival of the 1960s (get it at Amazon) reads like a fairytale for Trad. Jazz lovers. I personally couldn’t put it down once I cracked the cover and I could really feel Bill’s love of the music and his passion for keeping the tradition alive emanating from each page.

You hear the same love in each track from Jazz Crusade. Whether its the spiritual stylings of Dr. Micheal White on At The Cross, Tuba Fats and His Chosen Few kicking it Brass Band style or Geoff Cole’s tribute to that madman Jelly Roll Morton — Jazz Crusade’s cuts span the breadth and depth of the New Orleans Jazz story. Have a flip through the PepperHorn Radio pages and have a listen to some of the clips. Once you’ve caught the spirit you won’t be able to let it go!

If you haven’t dabbled in the world of New Orleans and Traditional Jazz, Blues, Gospel and Rag Time then you’re definitely missing out on a timeless, rewarding musical experience. Grab yourself some Jazz Crusade cuts — you won’t be sorry!
