Shaun Evans is the Founder and Director of PepperHorn Music and PepperHorn.com. He’s a Canadian-born arranger, composer and saxophonist who now makes Melbourne, Australia his home. Shaun began his professional career in his early teens working with many local Big Bands, Function groups and also a couple of Symphonies (on the licorice stick!). At 18 he went to work for Carnival Cruise Lines and soon took over as Musical Director, running his own 10 piece band and working with the variety of other musician on the ship. His ship-board stint extended to Royal Caribbean in his 20s, interspersed with summers at home in Toronto running a mix of different ensembles around town. His five-or-so years on the ship made him many friends and contacts which resulted in the ability to consult as an arranger for acts on the ships, in Vegas and eventually touring and cabaret shows throughout Europe and the rest of the world. Through this work he saw the demand that working musicians have for quality, pro arrangements that are easy to read and use. Because of recognizing this gap in the market he decided to set up PepperHorn and work on building a catalog for PepperHorn Music.
We’ve been busy at work creating a new spin on an old classic for our PepperHorn Golden Era catalogue and this one’s a real jem — a 2 Horn to Big Band re-imagining of Scott Joplin’s Maple Leaf Rag. Even at almost a century old, this ole gal’s got a lot to give you and your dancing public! We’ve taken Joplin’s stride stylings and passed them around the band for a fun packed, swingin’ romp through Ragtime. The piano part is a little simplified so your Keyboardist doesn’t take one look at the part and quit!
